about

"The forward swell of the approaching electro-classical tsunami!"

"The Ill-Tempered Synclavier" (ITS) is a reconsideration of some of the ideas behind J.S. Bach's "The Well-Tempered Clavier".

The ITS developed organically (or synthetically) from Bach's preludes and fugues. It is not a simple re-voicing of existing works, but a collection of derivative, new compositions.* "The Well-Tempered Clavier" explored the technical and expressive capacities of a particular leading-edge technology of Bach's time. Such is my intention with this work, for the early 21st century. The ITS explores complex relationships among timbres and textures, for these are the frontiers most expansively opened by contemporary music synthesis technologies.

My hope is that you will find beauty, interest, and humor in this collection. On the other hand, a true Bach aficionado probably would deem it "an abomination in every key".** Meh.

* "Prelude: A Tip of the Hat..." incorporates the whole of Bach's prelude in C major from "The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1".

** "The Ill-Tempered Synclavier" includes the first 12 prelude and fugue pairs, C major - F minor (BWV 846-857). "The Ill-Tempered Synclavier II" presents works derived from the F# major - B minor pairs (BWV 858-869). If a few people like these works, ITS III and IV will tackle "The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 2".
